On Tuesday, November 4th, 2025, Western Greenbrier Middle School's 8th-grade class had a unique opportunity to leap into the future and experience the realities of personal finance through the West Virginia State Treasurer's Office's impactful "Get a Life" budget simulation.
For almost two decades, this one-of-a-kind program has been empowering West Virginia students with essential financial education. WGMS was one of over 140 middle schools the Treasurer's staff visits annually!
What is "Get a Life"?
Students were launched into a simulated life where they have graduated high school and secured a full-time job. Some were tasked with supporting spouses and families, but all had bills to pay!
Students traveled to different stations to:
🏠Buy homes and vehicles.
đź›’ Purchase food and other needs and wants.
📉 Manage their monthly budget to stay afloat.
The highlight of the simulation was the opportunity to "Level Up" their education by going back to school and graduating from a college or trade school. This advancement allowed them to earn more money and instantly see how higher education impacts a monthly budget!
A Big Thank You to Greenbrier West High School for providing volunteers!
The simulation’s success was bolstered by GWHS who helped students make purchases and offered unique, real-world perspectives at each station, creating a realistic learning environment.
Why the Program is So Valuable:
The "Get a Life" program is a dynamic and successful way to teach our students:
